Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration in the News.

NPR's Weekend America (Listen Now)
Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007
On Hilton Head Island in South Carolina, hundreds of people are gathering for the 11th annual Gullah Celebration. The original Gullah were African slaves that settled along the Atlantic coast. Gullah is also the name of the language that the people spoke and still speak today. Desiree Cooper had a chance to speak with Louise Cohen, a local Gullah storyteller.

Winston-Salem Journal - Feb 10 10:16 PM
People have come to Hilton Head for nearly 50 years to drink in the island's natural beauty, sun themselves on sandy beaches and play golf year-round in its temperate climate. We came to hear the lilting sound of Gullah spoken by those for whom the language comes naturally, and to learn about their history. We came to eat their food and see their arts and crafts.

February is alive with the vivid colors, sounds and tastes of the Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration. But amid the pageantry, the homegoing of Brother William Brown Jr. during the celebration is a still reminder of the foundations of the Gullah culture.
